The Intern’s Insight – 5/28/2011
Hello folks, Intern Tommy here and this is the first of what I hope will be many posts I like to call “The Intern’s Insight”. I’ll be talking about several things that have happened this week in sports. I’ll touch on all the main sports, but I will also give you a look at the things you probably didn’t pay attention to.
First, I wanna hit my favorite sport, which would be soccer. I’ve been watching the UEFA Champions League final on FOX today, and FC Barcelona have come through like the champions they are. At the time of posting, they are beating Manchester United 3-1 with only a few minutes left in the game. I’m a bit disappointed since I picked United to win 2-1, but Barca have just been the better team all game. The best player in the world, Lionel Messi, scored Barca’s second goal of the match, and since then they’ve had the lead. This event is the biggest club match in European (football) soccer, and I’m glad it’s getting the attention it deserves here in the US.
Moving onto baseball, the turmoil around the New York Mets and their ownership situation continues as they have a new minority owner pending approval. David Einhorn, who poker players might recognize from the 2006 World Series of Poker Main Event which he finished 18th at, has agreed in principle to acquire 33% of the team for 200 million dollars. He has an option to increase his stake to 60%, but the Wilpon family can block it by giving him back his original 200 million stake. That would block a majority takeover by Einhorn, but would allow him to keep the 33% share. Personally I just wish the Wilpons would sell him the entire franchise and get out of town. The fans have so much resentment to ownership over the past few years, and all in all I think everyone in the Mets fanbase can agree that we need a fresh change. We need ownership that is committed to winning, not just committed to making money. Our goal should not be to be like the Pittsburgh Pirates, who make money, but have been bleeding losses for so long.
One topic I meant to say something about on last week’s show was the death of “Macho Man” Randy Savage. He had a heart attack in his car, which then crashed. As I type this up, I’m reminded of his match at WrestleMania VIII against “Nature Boy” Ric Flair. Watching it now, I can appreciate the kind of entertainer he was. He had an incredible work ethic in the ring and was almost always able to make his opponent look pretty good. He was also one of the best talkers in the business, you were always entertained listening to Randy on the mic. He will be sorely missed by wrestling fans all over the world. I for one will let out an “OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH YEAH!” when I get my next Slim Jim.
One more thing before I call it good here: We have our NBA and NHL finalists! In the NBA Finals, it’s gonna be the Miami Heat taking on the Dallas Mavericks, while in the NHL Stanley Cup finals it’s the Boston Bruins against the Vancouver Canucks. I’ve got Dallas in 6 in the NBA, and Vancouver in 6 in the Stanley Cup finals. Who ya’ got? Post a comment and let’s see who’s right or wrong!
That’s gonna do it for the first edition of The Intern’s Insight. Be sure to tune into 1460 WVOX tomorrow at 6 PM for another great hour of entertainment from us here at Real Fans, Real Talk! If you can’t get to a radio that gets the station, watch us live on this very website. One way or another, I hope you’re able to join us because you won’t regret it. This is Intern Tommy, be safe and be well.
